iCAN Summit 2018 arrives in Edinburgh
6th July 2018
The International Children’s Advisory Network (iCAN) Summit 2018 arrives in Edinburgh on Sunday bringing together young people from across the globe and supporting the scientific community to engage with children on research, medicine, and innovation.
Running from 8 – 13 July, the week-long summit has been organised by the NRS Children’s Network, and will host over 150 delegates.
iCAN is a worldwide consortium of children’s advisory groups working together to provide a voice for children and families in health, medicine, research, and innovation through communication and collaboration. iCAN’s chapters work locally in partnerships with their local children’s hospitals and communities, and collaborate together network-wide to have a global impact. Through youth-led councils, committees and focus groups, they address needs of paediatric clinical research and healthcare, influence state and federal regulations, and advocate for paediatric patients across the globe.
The summit provides the young people of the Network with an invaluable opportunity to learn from one another and network with professionals from across the globe, while allowing the scientific community to engage with children and learn about the value and the significant importance of the influence of children on research, medicine, and innovation.
Based in the University of Edinburgh’s South Hall Complex throughout the week, the Summit will be opened by Maureen Watt MSP, Minister for Mental Health, and will see the young people engaged in workshops around rare diseases, drug development, clinical trial design, genetics, music therapy, and much more. The week will also include a visit to Dynamic Earth, where the young people will learn about the future of medicine, and how technology and data are driving some of the biggest advances in healthcare.
Pamela Dicks, NRS Children’s Network Manager, said: “After attending successful conferences in Washington, Barcelona and Orlando it is a privilege to host the International Children’s Advisory Network (iCAN) Summit in Edinburgh. Providing children and families with a global voice in health, medicine, research and innovation unites everyone attending the summit. We have created an exciting and diverse programme for our youth members, parents and industry sponsors. Combined with our Scottish hospitality and the beautiful city of Edinburgh I am confident we will have an inspirational week of learning and networking.”
