International Clinical Trials Day 2023
19th May 2023
Over 40,000 participants across Scotland took part in vital clinical research trials in 2021-22
The figures are announced on International Clinical Trials Day (20 May) – a day dedicated to celebrating clinical research around the world. It acknowledges the first randomised clinical trial conducted in May 1747 by Scottish physician James Lind.
This year, we mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS – itself a reminder of the incredible medical progress made across the decades, and reflect on the importance of clinical research then, now and in the future. It is the single most important way in which we improve our healthcare – by identifying the best means to prevent, diagnose and treat conditions, and an essential part of an effective, modern NHS.
But research can only take place with the important contribution made by members of the public working in partnership with researchers and healthcare professionals.
This diverse group – from patients, carers, family, and friends of patients, to potential future patients and those who use health and social care services – all have an important role.
By coming forward to take part in research – whether that is shaping a research project or taking part as a participant, their contribution is ultimately helping us to save lives.
International Clinical Trials Day is an important date for reiterating that message – that while Scotland’s portfolio of research is helping to shape a modern, innovative health and care system, nothing can be achieved without volunteers.
One recent volunteer was Commonwealth 10,000 metres champion Eilish McColgan who became the 300,000th volunteer to join the Scottish Health Research Register and Biobank (SHARE), which gives people the opportunity to sign up and take part in research – but many more are needed and so International Clinical Trials Day is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on ways to get involved:
- Search current trials by location or condition on Be Part of Research
- Register with SHARE to be informed of future research that you could be suitable for
- Read about the experiences of researchers, participants and family
- Sign up to the newsletter for all the latest news and information
- Join a Patient and Public Involvement Group – use your experience as a patient, carer or member of the public to help researchers design and conduct their research studies by participating in these important groups
