Updated GDPR Transparency Wording Template

Updated GDPR Transparency Wording Template

22nd October 2024

The Health Research Authority (HRA) has developed a series of GDPR templates to help ensure research participants have all the information they need to make an informed decision about the use of their data

The updated GDPR transparency wording is relevant to anyone carrying out health and social care research in any of the four nations, with sponsors encouraged to start using the new template from Tuesday 22 October 2024.

Changes to the template include more detailed information on how data is handled when it is sent abroad and more detailed information on Data Subjects’ rights when their data is used in research. This will bring the template in line with Participant Information Quality Standards — applied UK-wide by research ethics staff — and the Four Principles for meaningful involvement of patients and the public in health and social care research.

The template can be used for new and open studies. The use of this wording in open studies constitutes a non-substantial, non-notifiable amendment, and does not require notification to the REC, national coordinating functions or the research management function of participating NHS or HSC organisations.

The full update can be read on the HRA’s website.
