Purpose: To co-ordinate and progress research opportunities between the NHS, academia and industry
Background
Health Science Scotland (HSS) is a partnership of medical universities and their associated NHS Health Boards in Scotland to promote and deliver strategic research opportunities in the field of clinical and translational medicine.
HSS brings together the most senior figures from across Government, academia and the National Health Service to promote and enhance Scotland as a world-leading hub of innovative health research and development.
HSS is supported by the NHS Research Scotland Central Management Team (CMT), which is hosted by Scottish Health Innovations Limited (SHIL), an independent company owned by NHS Tayside, the NHS National Waiting Times Center Board and the Scottish Ministers.
SHIL receives a grant from the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government to deliver CMT, and the role will develop in line with the requirements of the grant. HSS is funded by the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government and the Scottish Universities to increase the level and quality of health research and development in Scotland.
This post will report to the NRS Central Management Team General Manager. This part-time position offers a flexible working environment.
Main Activities
- HSS Meeting secretariat
- Progress collaborative strategic research opportunities
- Coordinate NHS/academic development opportunities
- Coordinate external communications to industry and UK and international funders
- Promote HSS brand
Main Duties
HSS Meeting Secretariat (with admin support)
- Administration for meetings of the HSS Board and other committees as they arise
- Plan meeting schedules, location and facilities
- Preparation and distribution of agendas, committee papers and presentations
- Report to the Board on progress with activities
- Write up accurate minutes of meetings and action points
- Maintain up-to-date logs of papers discussed at the Committees and decisions made
- Any other administrative requirements to run a successful HSS Board
Progress collaborative strategic research opportunities
- Identify and progress strategic research opportunities between NHS/academia/ industry and public research funders
- Establish key relationships with University academics, NHS clinicians and other organisations. Scan and search sources to identify new and emerging health care research opportunities of potential interest
- Develop models for horizon scanning – capturing intelligence, analysing and reporting, and feeding back to colleagues
- Develop and deliver a strategy to increase the quantity and range of national and international funding activity across HSS
- To coordinate the timely, targeted, identification and dissemination of appropriate strategic funding opportunities
Coordinate NHS/academic development opportunities
- Project manage the development of projects identified through HSS, including promotion and development of funding proposals
- Coordinate bid partners input, organise discussions and meetings to progress bids. Provide direct input into bid texts if required
- Support costing of strategic research projects; coordinate project approval and submission with senior staff
- Co-ordinate high-quality negotiations during development of research collaborations
Coordinate external communications to industry and UK and international funders
- To act as the point of contact with industry and funders on HSS projects
- To take the lead role in coordinating the reporting of project progress and outputs to funders
Promote HSS brand
- To promote the HSS brand to strategic stakeholders in co-ordination with NRS
- To organise internal and external workshops, attend relevant sector events and present where required to help shape the future strategic direction of HSS
Experience and Skills
Required
- Strong scientific background, with a relevant qualification to masters level or equivalent experience
- Familiarity with research project development, sources of grant funding and other approaches to developing collaborative research activity within an academic environment
- Attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Excellent analytical, writing and editing ability
- Good communication skills
Desired
- Some experience of working with the NHS or in a hospital setting
- Experience of working within a University or NHS research environment
