Morag Place
South East Research Coordinator (NHS Lothian, NHS Borders)
Morag has worked for the network since Mar 2014. She has an honours degree in Psychology and a PGDip in Speech and Language Therapy. Morag worked as an SLT with adults with communication support needs as a result of stroke or a neurodegenerative condition. Following her clinical work she has worked for the past 8 years as a researcher on a range of different research and consultancy projects. These have included:
- ESRC funded research looking at the impact of aphasia on close relationships and developing a tool for exploring differing perspectives
- RCSLT / Scottish Government funded consultancy work developing an accessible workshop to support people covered by the Adult Support and Protection Scotland (2007) Act to understand their rights within the act and subsequent training and feedback days supporting SLTs and other professionals to run these workshops within their local areas
- Consultancy work adapting resources to be communication accessible
- Scottish Government funded research looking at the feasibility, reliability and validity of the Visual CARE measure for use in AHP services
- The Prostate Cancer Charity funded research based at the Cancer Care Research Centre, Stirling University, working on a research project exploring the reasons for timing of presentation in Prostate cancer
- Survivor Scotland, Scottish Government funded consultancy developing a tool and training course for health and social care professionals to work with survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
In all her previous roles, Morag has worked alongside a ‘patient’ advisory group and feels strongly about the importance of involving people with personal experience at all stages of a research project. She also feels passionate about being involved in research which has a practical impact on clinical practice and patient experience.
